WATER HEATER CAPACITY: Larger heaters not only cost more, your energy bills will be higher as a result of maintaining the temperature of a larger tank of water. Don't waste money buying a larger water heater than you need. Rather than basing a purchase decision on the size of a water heater tank, consider the First Hour Rating (FHR), or peak hour demand of a heater when making your decision on what size water heater you need. The FHR is listed on the Energy Guide label on all water heaters, and will tell you how much hot water that unit will produce in the first hour of use demand. Our experienced technicians can help you determine your capacity needs, and guide you in purchasing the most appropriate water heater, which can save you money both on the initial purchase and on operating costs.
WATER HEATER EFFICIENCY: Gas water heaters have an Energy Factor (EF) that indicates their efficiency level. The gas water heaters we sell are the newer, high efficiency (high EF) units and may qualify for any discount programs your gas company may currently be sponsoring. Be sure to check with your local gas provider if you are purchasing a new gas water heater. |

When you purchase a new water heater, the thermostat will either be preset at the factory or will be set by your plumber for the recommended maximum temperature of 120 degrees. We NEVER recommend increasing water heater temperature beyond this recommended setting. First, this a safety issue. Setting the temperature at no higher than 120 degrees will help to avoid scalding from excessively hot water. Secondly, keeping the temperature at this safe level also means the elements and controls (the water heater thermostats) will not work as hard. This can not only save you energy costs, but may also extend the life of the elements and thermostats.
This setting should provide plenty of hot water to satisfy your household's requirements if the tank has been sized properly. See our recommendations about WATER HEATER SIZING. Please remember to have your water heater installed only by a licensed PLUMBER. A licensed plumber will know what the proper temperature setting is, and will be sure the heater is set to that temperature for your family's safety. A licensed plumber will also make sure the water heater installation is according to all applicable codes.
A licensed plumber will also ensure the relief valve is installed correctly and functioning as it should. If something on your water heater should malfunction, the water in the tank can superheat to temperatures in excess of 210 degrees and/or pressure in the tank can build up to exceed 160 lbs. The temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve on your water heater is designed to release water if this happens, preventing the tank from exploding. Don't take chances with your family's safety! Have your water heater professionally installed, and have it inspected periodically to make sure the controls, elements, and that all-important relief valve are all working properly. |
