As homeowners across the Phoenix Az valley start turning on their air conditioners…
….Stevens Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning starts getting calls with questions about ac problems.
Occasionally, someone will call with a question about a “mystery noise” – a hissing sound, a buzzing, or maybe a thump.
Fortunately, most of the time we’re able to reassure our customers these noises are not serious problems that need ac repair.
A hissing noise, for instance. If you have a split system and the air handler is in the house (usually in a closet) you may have heard a hissing noise when your air conditioner kicks on. Most likely, it’s just the refrigerant moving through the system. If the air conditioning unit seems to be working fine (cooling the house as it should) this is probably nothing to worry about.
What about a buzzing noise? Ever hear a slight buzz from your air handler? This is probably just from the vibration of the transformer in your unit and, once again, nothing to be concerned about. Even a new unit may vibrate as the system cycles on and off.
Sometimes you may hear a “thump” near the return air vent when your air conditioner kicks on.
Now, this IS something you need to pay attention to. It probably means the filter is dirty. If air can’t move freely through the filter, the restriction of air flow may be causing the filter itself to be pushed up in the grill, dropping again (thump!) as the ac cycles off.
So, if the mystery noise coming from your ac is a thump – check your filter. If you’re hearing a hiss or buzz, it’s probably not anything to worry about. But, remember, you can call us anytime during normal business hours and an experienced ac technician will be happy to answer any questions you have – about mystery noises or anything else having to do with your air conditioning system.
